IIT JEE (Main): JoSAA Releases Revised Schedule for Joint Seat Allocation 2015: Counselling to Start from 29 June

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) that conduct the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) for admissions to IITs, ISM, IIITs, NITS and GFTIs have launched a new web portal Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) for allotting seats to JEE Advanced students in the above mentioned institutions. The JoSAA will be the sole authority for allotting seats and will start the process from June 29. The launch of the web portal has resulted in the seat allocation process that was to start from June 25-29 being postponed to June 29-July 3.

The seat allocation to IITs, NITs and other technical institutes was supposed to begin from 1 July, but it is now expected to be delayed. As per the new schedule, option filling for students will be available for five days from June 29 to July 3 during which a mock seat allocation round will be conducted on July 2. It will be followed by validation of option forms by students on July 4.

Thereafter, on July 5 the first round of seat allocation will take place and students allotted seats therein will have to confirm between July 6 and 10. This will be followed by the second and third round of allocation. The fourth round of allocation will be held for only NITs. The academic session for IITs is expected to start from July 21, five days later than the previous July 16 start.

IIT Kharagpur to start offering MBBS courses too

In a path-breaking move, the Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur will introduce medical education in its curriculum along with its renowned courses in engineering, humanities and social science.

With the inclusion of medical studies, Kharagpur became the first of the 16 IITs to take such a step. The Dr BC Roy institute of Medical Science, named after the former chief minister of West Bengal, is expected to be functional by the end of 2017. Media reports said the institute will include a 400-bed super-specialty hospital.

The central government had allocated Rs 230 crore last year for establishing the medical
college, which will be set up on three acres on the edge of the sprawling IIT-Kharagpur campus, authorities said.

“Construction will begin soon and is expected to be finished in approximately 26 months,” IIT-Kharagpur director Partha Pratim told the media.
"It will bring the two diverse disciplines of engineering and medicine together in education and research. Technology will be used to access and treat a large number of patients through satellite centres and secondary hospitals," he said.

Authorities have reportedly applied for necessary approvals from the Medical Council of India (MCI), which oversees undergraduate medical education in the country.

AIPMT 2015: SC Extends Time for Retest; Directs CBSE to Declare Results by 17 August

Police investigation found that the maximum number of beneficiaries of the paper leak, at a particular examination centre, were 15 students who appeared in Siliguri. Supreme Court had cancelled the AIPMT exam and directed CBSE to hold it afresh and declare results before August 17. the re-test date, venues of CBSE AIPMT 2015 is yet to be announced on cbse.nic.in or aipmt.nic.in
The SC heard Central Board of Secondary Education's (CBSE) plea seeking more time to re-conduct AIPMT exam, as it is "impossible" for the board to meet four weeks deadline given by the apex court. As the matter is of grave concern, the vacation Bench comprising Justices RK Agrawal and Amitava Roy agreed to hear the plea on 19 June.
In view of discrepancies found in the 3 May AIPMT examination, the SC had on 15 June cancelled the test and directed CBSE to hold the AIPMT 2015 again within four weeks. Following this, the CBSE reportedly held a meeting to discuss the date and venues for the re-examination. However, they have now approached the top court again.
Several students and parents had appealed to the SC seeking cancellation of 3 May AIPMT examination in the wake of question paper leak and cheating accusations. As the investigation is still pending and all the beneficiaries have not been identified yet, the SC took the decision against declaring the result, which was supposed to be announced on 5 June.  It was first delayed during SC hearings and later was cancelled. The students, who are already anxious about their future, are worried even more now as this is delaying the admission process and the academic year.

Nearly 6.3 lakh students had taken the pre-medical test conducted this year. Of over six lakh students, only 2,000 will be admitted to various medical and dental colleges across India.

CBSE AIPMT 2015 results delayed again, SC to pronounce order on June 15

AIPMT Result 2015: Supreme Court has reserved its verdict on petitions seeking cancellation of the AIPMT exam and demanding re-examination due to the alleged irregularities in the exam conducted on May 3. Supreme Court, who is likely to pronounce order on Monday, has asked CBSE not to declare the All India Pre-Medical Test results till then.
During the hearing, the bench comprising justices R K Agarwal and Amitabha Roy said, “The examination stands vitiated even if one student is being benefited illegally.”
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had conducted the AIPMT 2015 exam on May 3, 2015. Haryana police has arrested 12 people and 25 students till now in connection with the leak of AIPMT answer keys on the day of the exam. These include two dentists and a MBBS student. The kingpin of the paper leak racket Roop Singh Dangi is absconding and the Haryana police has announce a reward of Rs 1 lakh for anyone who provides information about him. Dangi is a resident of Madina village in Rohtak district, Haryana.
The Supreme Court did not allow the AIPMT exam to be re-conducted and asked the Haryana Police to track the beneficiaries instead.
While parents and students are demanding re-examination following the massive irregularities, CBSE has pointed out that re-examination would be very difficult as the board would require at least 120 days or 6 months for the arrangements. This delay would also have adverse effect on MBBS/BDS courses.

Future focus

Souvik Bhattacharya, deputy director and professor of mechanical engineering, IIT Kharagpur, on upcoming specializations in engineering.

Engineering education is slated for a paradigm shift. There has been a good bit of talk on switching from analysis to synthesis. Convergence seems to be the keyword rather than learning in silos. While the content is still important, the teaching techniques, too, are critical.Today, institutes deploy various strategies to enhance the learning experience. The curricula should emphasis the importance of experiential learning and design. Systems concepts have to be learnt and absorbed with a focus on innovation, creation and development of products.

The M.Tech degree in applied petroleum engineering is largely a trans-disciplinary programmer combining inputs from geology and geophysics, mining engineering, chemical engineering and mechanical engineering. The degree is offered with various specializations at institutes such as the IITs; Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad; University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun (UPES); among others. The general entry criteria is a B.Tech in an allied field of study such as chemical, mechanical, production, polymer or petrochemical engineering.

A PG degree in financial engineering is being welcomed by industry and financial institutions with attractive placement opportunities. Students with a strong numerical background can work with investment banks or other financial institutions to pursue a rewarding career in this field.

Yet another upcoming field of study is engineering entrepreneurship. Students with a B.Tech in any field can opt for this specialization at the M.Tech level. The programmer provides students the opportunity to develop their creative skills while applying principles of management, marketing and finance to the challenges of starting, growing or managing a business.

PG programmers in quality engineering design and manufacturing, too, are gaining popularity among students from an industrial electronics or mechanical engineering background. The academic content of such programmers exposes students to major engineering aspects related to goods including product modelling and development, design for quality, maneuverability and assembly, etc.

Data science and engineering, which trains engineers to analyse huge amounts of structured and unstructured data and take decisions based on such analytic, is becoming a popular option among learners. It is taught at some IITs and private institutes. A PG diploma in business analytic is jointly offered by ISI Calcutta, IIM Calcutta and IIT Kharagpur, providing inter-disciplinary exposure.

A number of institutes offer courses in transportation engineering. Graduate engineers with a B.Tech, BE or an equivalent degree in civil, electrical or mechanical engineering and a qualifying GATE score are eligible to apply for these programmers.
