NEET 2017 to be implemented

The Supreme Court has finally given a green signal for conducting NEET (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test), a single entrance exam to shortlist candidates for BDS, MBBS and Post Graduate courses in all medical colleges across the country. The judgement was passed on Monday, 19th April 2016. NEET will be implemented from the coming session. The Medical Council of India, a statutory body that governs the medical curriculum and endorses medical qualifications has gladly welcomed the decision. The MCI believes that replacing multiple entrance tests with NEET would help reduce corruption and the disparity in admission to medical courses. As per IMA, this decision will uphold the sanctity of the medical profession.

While the MCI and IMA are all praise for the Supreme Court’s decision and are looking forward to the implementation of NEET, the same has not gone down well with certain states. Among those who have opposed the decision are the states of Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. In Tamil Nadu, students are given admission to the MBBS courses on the basis of their result in Class 12th.   The Indian state of Kerala also follows a similar procedure. As per these states, there is a whole lot of difference in the Central and State Board’s syllabus.

As per Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, NEET “would adversely affect the interests of students in the State, in particular those from weaker sections and from rural areas and it infringes upon the State’s right to determine the admission policies to medical educational institutions.” The government of the state has shown severe resentment and is expected to knock the doors of the court to seek amendment in this decision. The state of Maharashtra has also opposed the decision and has requested IMC not to admit students to dental and medical colleges based on NEET and instead let them continue with MH-CET. “Since the NEET is based on CBSE syllabus, the government will have to upgrade its HSC syllabus and then Maharashtra can join the NEET from 2017”, said the Medical Education Minister, Vinod Tawde.

Major Changes in JEE 2016

Joint Entrance Examination follows almost the same pattern year after year. However, many a times the board suggests certain changes in the exam that are implemented more often than not. This year round there were certain major changes that were made in JEE. In case you aren’t aware about the amendments done in JEE 2016 then read on to find out about the same.

From this year round, the state of Maharashtra has ceased to take part in the Joint Entrance Exam. The students of this state will appear in Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MH-CET) to seek admission in engineering courses instead of appearing for JEE Main and Advanced. They will get admission based on the marks scored in MH-CET just the way it had been happening until the year 2013.

“The decision of Maharashtra government will be useful for students from Maharashtra. As per JEE syllabus candidates are required to study class 11 and class 12 syllabus in order to appear in JEE Main. But the condition is not similar with MH-CET”, said the State Higher and Technical Education Minister, Vinod Tawde. He also added that JEE Main is usually conducted just about two weeks after the Class 12th exams and hence the students do not get enough time for preparation. On the other hand, those appearing in MH-CET will get much more time for preparation.

Along with the marks scored in MH-CET, the class 12th marks will also be taken into consideration for admission to engineering colleges in Maharashtra. Until the year 2013, the state gave admission in undergraduate engineering courses based on CET.

JEE Main 2016 Student Reactions

Around 12 lakh students registered for the JEE Main this year. A lot of enthusiasm as well as anxiousness was seen among the students as they entered their examination centre. Each had his own interesting story about exam preparation and expectation from the paper. However, what we await the most is the students’ reaction post the examination. This time round the reactions received were pretty varied. Let us see what different students had to say about it.

Aditya from D.P.S. R.K. Puram shared that he found the chemistry part tough. “There were many unusual questions in the Chemistry section that were definitely not easy. Though many questions in the Mathematics section were easy to solve, most of them were time taking”, he shared. On the other hand, Harsh Mishra from Vanasthali School, Delhi found the chemistry section rather easy. “The exam was fine. It was not much difficult but the Mathematics section was little complicated. I found the Chemistry section to be easy compared to Mathematics and Physics.”

Another JEE aspirant named Akanksha found the overall exam quite difficult. “The paper was tough for me. As far as the section wise difficulty level is considered, Chemistry was of easy to moderate level, Physics and Mathematics were very difficult. Some of the questions were very confusing and tricky. Although the topics were common with the CBSE board exam but solving the questions was a lengthy process and hence time consuming.” Ritu from Maharashtra State Board said, “My performance was good, as per my expectations. I did not find any wrong questions. The difficulty level was moderate. Maths was toughest followed by Physics and Chemistry. I prepared from NCERT books and last years’ question papers. There was no problem with the frisking process.”

Siddhant from CBSE board was also content with his performance. “I did well in the exam. I found difficulty to be of moderate level. But, I haven’t done well in Chemistry as it is not my strong area. Mathematics was kind of easy but Physics was very tough", he shared. Pravesh Shukla, on the other hand stated, “The exam taking experience was nerve racking for me. The paper was extremely lengthy and the Mathematics and Physics questions were calculation intensive which drained out most of my time and energy. I am hoping to clear my cutoff.”

Looking at the mixed reactions of the students it can be said that though the paper was apparently tricky however those who had prepared well did manage to perform well.

3 Steps to Master Speed Reading

Reading is one of the best habits one can adopt and it is all the more better if you accelerate in it. It is strange that only a few among us have the ability to speed read even though it takes just a few simple steps to master the art. If you have been trying hard to speed read your books but failing constantly then the information shared here should come handy. Here are 3 easy steps that shall help you master speed reading.

  1. Focus on the Meaning
The first thing you require doing is to relax and calm down. Hush all the voices running in your head to concentrate wholly and solely on your reading. Now, one mistake that we make is that we read the text aloud in our mind and rather than trying to understand the meaning of the words we focus on their sound whereas it should be the other way round. Your focus should be on comprehending the meaning of the words rather than imagining their sound.

  2. Let Your Finger Guide You
Don’t you often lose track of where you are while reading through a book. Well, most of us do and end up breaking the concentration. It wastes a lot of time thereby lowering the reading speed. One way to curb this problem is by using your finger as your guide just the way you did in your primary classes. The technique, known as guiding the eye, helps you maintain focus and improves speed.

  3. Don’t Re-Read
Most of us re-read the text in order to understand it better and end up consuming double the time. Use the technique shared in the first point to comprehend the words as you read them so that you don’t feel the urge to re-read the text and read through your books quickly.

Thus, using the above techniques would not only help you read your books quickly but would also help you understand them faster.

5 Habits of Organized Students

Getting organized is undeniably the first step towards success. Though easier said than done, those who master the art outshine the rest. So if you have been neglecting this aspect until now, it is time to consider it seriously. Here are those five habits of organized students that give them an edge over the others. Inculcate these and get ready to experience the positive changes they bring in your life.

  • Get a Calendar/ Planner
Get a planner or a calendar and prepare a schedule. Schedule your day, week and month in a way that you are able to make the most of it and stick to your schedule diligently.
  • Set Priorities
It is essential to review the tasks at hand at the beginning of each day and prioritize them based on their importance. This way you shall be able to complete all your important tasks on time.
  • Study Right After Your Class
Don’t wait until you near the examination date. Mugging up your lessons a day or two before the exams or going through the entire book a night before the exam would do no good. It is suggested to study your lessons simultaneously each day as they are covered in your class. This is how the organized students work.
  • Complete Your Assignments before the deadlines
Don’t leave your assignments for the last day. Complete them a day or two prior to the deadline so that you don’t have to leave them in case of an emergency. Also completing them on time will give you ample time for reviewing and editing them.
  • Keep Your Desk Clean
You might want to devote almost all your time to your studies however it is important to squeeze in some time to tidy up your room, your desk and your bag. If your room or desk is in a messy condition, you will end up wasting a lot of time looking for your books and other essential items. It may also hamper your power to focus. A clean and tidy environment brings in positive energy, keeps your spirits high and enhances your power to concentrate.

Last Month Preparation for AIPMT 2016

All India Pre-Medical Test has been scheduled for the 1st of May this year. So, all those of you planning to appear for it are left with less than a month to prepare for the same. How to make the most of this last month leading to the exam is the big question now. The stress levels are high during this time and may cause distress and anxiety. However, the key is to stay calm and determined and give in your 100%. Here are a few tips that should be followed diligently during these last few weeks in order to get through the exam with a good score.

Prepare a Schedule
First thing that you require doing is to prepare a workable schedule that allows you to cover the entire syllabus in the days left for the exam. Review it at the end of each day to see if you have met the set targets or need to push harder. It is suggested to revise the plan if you are not able to follow it even after giving your best.

Give Mock Tests
It is the time to revise all your lessons over and over again. However, just revising and mugging up chapters is not sufficient. You must test your knowledge side by side to know how much you have grasped and the best way to do this is to give mock tests like the ones available at Etoosindia.com or solve CBSE sample papers. Give at least one mock test per day within a stipulated time frame.

Focus on Important Parts
While you should be thorough with the entire syllabus, it is suggested to pay special attention to the portions that are important from examination point of you.

Go for Group Studies
This is the time when you have already studied your entire syllabus thoroughly and are revising it to retain it well. It is thus the right time to go for group studies every once in a while. Put across different questions to each other to put your knowledge to test. You may get some useful information during these sessions that you might not get sitting at home.

Eat Right
It is true that you are what you eat. Eating a well balanced diet can boost your immune system and keep your energy levels high throughout the day on the other hand, oily, fried and sugary foods can make you feel lethargic and hamper your performance. Unhealthy food choice may even lead to health issues.

Sleep Well
You must never ever compromise on your sleep, not even during this crucial phase. Reducing your sleeping hours will not only mar your ability to concentrate but can also have negative repercussion on both your physical as well as mental health.

While you must devote most of your time to your studies however do not sit for long hours at a stretch. Take a few short breaks in between to refresh your mind. Figure out as to what it is that you require for rejuvenating and indulge in it. It may range from talking to a friend, going for a walk, dancing in your room or just about anything.

Does CBSE Board Exam Preparation Effects JEE Main Rank?

This is probably one of the first questions that arises in the mind of anyone who plans to give the IIT JEE and every IIT aspirant wants it answered. Well, logically if you have to devote your time on two separate things rather than concentrating on one then you wouldn’t be giving your 100% to either. It is as simple as that! So there is no denying the fact that those who study dedicatedly for JEE and concentrate only on the three subjects that this tough exam tests you on stand a higher chance of attaining a good rank. However, on digging deeper, it has been seen how proper time management and determination can help you crack both these with flying colours even if you prepare for them simultaneously.

All you require doing is to maintain a balance between the two. While the CBSE board exams are held in the month of March, JEE Main is mostly scheduled in the first half of April. The close proximity of these exams makes it all the more necessary for you to manage your time efficiently so as to score high in both these. Here are a few things that should help you achieve your goal:

Prepare a Plan
It is suggested to prepare a workable plan that enables you to devote enough time to prepare well for both the exams. Identify that part of the day that you can concentrate best and utilise it for studying. Fix different time slots for each and follow the set schedule diligently. Review your plan at the end of each day to check whether you have been able to attain the set goals or need to work harder.

Take Time to Rejuvenate
Even as you require studying for both the exams simultaneously, it is suggested not to over indulge in studies. Make sure you take short breaks in between to rest and refresh your mind as well as your body. Also never compromise on your sleep. Take 6-8 hours of sleep each day. This will keep you energized through the day and help you concentrate better.

Stay Determined
There may be days when you might not be able to work as per your plan. But don’t get disheartened, stay determined and focused and you will certainly be able to achieve the set target. The key is to keep going and not to give up at any point.

Let us have a closer look at both its advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of Stress :-

  • Motivates You
Why is it that most of us are able to concentrate better and study with dedication a night before the exam or work harder when a deadline is to be met while it is difficult to focus when there is still enough time? The reason is simple – it is stress that motivates you to sit and study/ work with dedication. It is a do or die situation for you at that time and you ought to give your best. It is said that deadlines invoke good stress that helps in keeping you motivated and thus benefits you.
  • Boosts Immune System
When in stress your body prepares itself for the probable injury or harm. One way in which it tries to protect itself is by releasing extra amount of interleukins, the chemicals that help in the smooth functioning of the immune system. This helps in developing the body’s defence mechanism though temporarily.
  • Renders Strength
Dealing with stress off and on can make you resilient as a person. It renders both physical and emotional strength. So you are in a better position to tackle a difficult situation.

Life Story of Steve Jobs

Born on 24th February 1955, to a Muslim father and a Catholic mother of German and Swiss descent, Jobs was adopted by Paul Reinhold Jobs and Clara Hagopian shortly after his birth. The couple adopted their second child, Patricia in the year 1957 and shifted to Mountain View, California in 1961. Paul and Clara showered immense love on both their children and nurtured them well. Steve and Patricia were brought up in a counter cultural lifestyle.

Paul rebuilt and fixed cars as a hobby and as a kid, Jobs admired his father’s craftsmanship. By the time he turned ten, he had grown deeply interested in electronics. While he was considered a loner by his classmates owing to his inability to make friends with kids of his own age, interestingly he had befriended many engineers living in his vicinity. Jobs had difficulty attending the conventional school however he continued with his studies. In Homestead High school, he made two close friends. One was a Homestead High alumnus, Steve Wozniak and the other was his girlfriend, Chrisann Brennan. Both Jobs and Wozniak idolised American singer, Bob Dylan and bonded over their mutual admiration for him. Jobs attended Reed College for a short while in 1972 and soon dropped out of it.
The following year, Wozniak designed a brand new version of the video game, Pong and gave it to Jobs who showed it at Atari Inc. in Los Gatos, California. Atari believed that it was Jobs who created it and hired him as a technician. In mid 1974, Jobs travelled to India in search of spiritual enlightenment and stayed there for 7 months. He donned a shaved head and traditional Indian clothes post returning to US. Jobs began experimenting with psychedelics around this time and shortly after he and Brennan became practitioners of Zen Buddhism. He began meditating for long hours at the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center.

He later joined back Atari and was assigned the task of creating circuit board for arcade video game Breakout. He accomplished the task with the help of Wozniak. Job’s genius counterpart then designed a low cost digital blue box in order to make free long distance calls. The two began selling it later and figured out how profitable the electronics field was. In 1976, Wozniak invented Apple I computer and Jobs suggested selling it. Apple Computer was thus formed with Jobs and Wozniak being its co-founder. Apple II was introduced by Jobs and Wozniak in the year 1977 at the West Coast Computer Faire. This was the very first consumer product sold by the newly formed company Apple Computer. It was well-received and became the first successful mass-produced microcomputer product.

Jobs soon unveiled a new kind of computer that he named Apple Lisa. The name was taken after his illegitimate daughter, Lisa. The company flourished and Jobs became a millionaire. He earned a net worth of over 100 million dollars by the time he was 25 and was enlisted in the Forbes list of nation’s richest people. In the year 1984, Apple came up with Macintosh however it was rather expensive and thus a hard sell. Eventually, a series of arguments and disagreements between Sculley, the President and CEO of Apple and Jobs led to the later resigning from Apple along with five of his senior employees.

Jobs then went on to work upon his new venture, NeXT. He founded NeXT Inc. in the year 1985. He was funded by billionaire Ross Perot. The NeXT computer was shown to the world in the year 1988 in San Francisco, California. The NeXT workstations were released in 1990 however these were largely dismissed owing to the fact that these were highly priced. The revised version, NeXTcube was released later the same year. The innovative NeXTMail multimedia email feature of this interpersonal computer was known to be its biggest selling point. Meanwhile, Jobs also assisted in developing the visual effects industry. Pixar’s first fully computer animated movie Toy Story was made possible partially because of the financial support rendered by Jobs. He went on to become the CEO and the biggest shareholder of Pixar Animation Studios. He also became a member of the Walt Disney Company’s board of directors after its acquisition of Pixar.

On personal front, Jobs married Laurene Powell in March 1991 in a Buddhist ceremony. Their first child Reed was born in September the same year. They had two more children - Erin who was born in 1995 and Eve, born in the year 1998.

In 1997, NeXT was acquired by Apple Inc. and Jobs became its CEO yet again. He then worked closely with designer Jonathan Ive and developed a series of products including the iMac, iTunes, iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Stores and iTunes Store in the years that followed. Mac OS was also refurbished into Mac OS X based on NeXT’s NeXTSTEP platform.

In October 2003, Jobs was diagnosed with cancer and he died eight years later on 5th October, 2011. Jobs continued working even as health issues began taking a toll on his life. No wonder, he has several accomplishments to his name.
