History of Department of Textile Technology, IIT Delhi

The Delhi Polytechnic which is now known as the Delhi College of Engineering was established in the year 1942 to offer diploma. It began offering degree courses with affiliation to the Delhi University in the year 1952. In 1958, a high power committee formed by the Central Government took the decision to set up a College of Engineering and Technology in the capital. IIT Delhi was established in collaboration with the British and the textile technology department was shifted completely to this all new institute. It began functioning in the year 1961 and since then there has been no looking back.

Courses Offered at Department of Textile Technology, IIT Delhi

The department offers various courses in textile technology including one undergraduate course and three post-graduate courses. It provides an undergraduate program in Textile Technology and postgraduate courses in Textile Chemical Processing, Fiber Science & Technology and Textile Engineering. Undergraduate Program

Undergraduate program in Textile Technology includes the development and classification of the polymeric raw materials and techniques of their conversion into textile materials. It also teaches the methods that help in further value addition of this material. Management and marketing of the products are also covered in detail under this program.

The first two semesters include basic sciences, engineering arts and sciences, and humanities and social sciences. In the next two semesters, there are a set of departmental core subjects in Textile Technology. From fifth semester there are departmental elective courses. The students require working on a project under the faculty member’s supervision in the final year.

The duration of this course is 4 years and it includes 8 semesters.

Postgraduate Programmes

  1. Textile Chemical Processing Programme caters to the textile wet processing sector. It also covers all about dyes and chemicals and the fibre industry.
  2. Textile Engineering trains the students for mechanical processing of the textile material.
  3. Fibre Science and Technology trains students for manmade fibre industry and the chemical processing of the textile material.

These courses are for 2 years each and include 4 semesters.

Doctorate in Textile Technology

This includes the study of properties and structure of fibres and fibrous materials, analysis of yarn, mechanics of production processes, nanotechnology applications, plasma treatment, design of technical textiles, medical textiles, micro encapsulation, comfort properties of textiles, eco friendly processing, polymer composites and apparel engineering to name a few. There are many other areas in which research is conducted by the Ph.D. students here.
