Named after the renowned educationist and patriot, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, the college was established back in the year 1958. Its campus is spread across 122 acres of land. It has as many as 2800 beds, 47 operation theatres running everyday and 7200 daily outpatient attendance. There are 4 other institutes attached to the college. These are the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Lok Nayak Hospital, Guru Nanak Eye Center and GB Pant Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research.
Known for offering excellent medical education, the college gives admission to as many as 290 undergraduate candidates, 245 post graduate and doctoral students every year. The courses offered here include Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Doctor of Medicine (MD), Post Graduate Diploma in Medicine and Post Doctoral Degree in Master of Surgery. For the undergraduate course that is M.B.B.S. the distribution of seats is done as Delhi University Quota (DUQ) – 85%, All India Quota (AIQ) – 15% and Government of India Quota (GOI) – 6 Nos. The number of seats for this course is 250. For Post Graduate course (MD/MS) and Post Graduate Diploma it is 50% quota each for Delhi University and All India. The number of seats for these is 153 and 23 respectively. For Post Doctoral (M. Ch.) it is 100% Delhi University Quota (DUQ) and there are only 4 seats.
The students are imparted education by well learned faculty members and given rigorous training by the resident doctors. The college houses as many as 810 resident doctors and 426 faculty members who offer high class education and patient care techniques to help the students embark a successful career in the medical field.
