Our Finance Minister in the budget speech of 2017-18 had announced the setting up of a national body which shall be responsible for conducting national level entrance exams. National Testing Agency (NTA) was approved by Union Cabinet last year in November in order to relieve CBSE, AICTE, etc. of their exam conducting duties.
These exams include the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) and National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Where JEE is conducted to enrol students in various engineering and architecture courses, NEET offers admissions to MBBS and BDS programmes in medical colleges all across the country. Some of the other exams which NTA shall be responsible to conduct include CTET, GATE, GPAT, GMAT, CAT, UGC NET 2019.
To begin its operation in the first year, Government allocated a fund of Rs. 25 Crores. The agency will cater 40 lakh students who will be appearing for various entrance exams. It is believed that NTA will conduct these prestigious nationwide examinations online and that too twice a year. Over the years these popular entrance tests were conducted only once in a year. The reason behind conducting these exams twice a year is to bring relief to students who usually face undue pressure. Students will now have better chances to perform.
Furthermore, NTA would work as an autonomous & self-sustained premier testing organisation to conduct these entrance exams. While the results for JEE & NEET 2018 has been announced recently, these exams might be conducted again in December 2018.
The agency will have subject matter experts and IT professionals who will be responsible to create question bank to be used in exams. The examinations will be completely online to avoid any kind of glitch and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) shall be compiled by NTA. Moreover, it will standardize the difficulty level which students are often seen complaining about.
