There has been a lot of speculation about the age limit for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test 2018 since quite a few months. Putting all these speculations to end, the Medical Council of India Gazette has finally announced the upper as well as lower age limit for NEET 2018.
The lower age limit for NEET 2018 has been set as 17 years. This means that the candidate must be 17 years old as on 31st December 2018. So, the candidate must not have born later than 31st December 2001. This holds good for the general category as well as the reserved categories.
The upper age limit of the candidates appearing in NEET 2018 has been set as 25 years as on the date of the exam.
A relaxation of 5 years has been given to the candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. This means that the candidates belonging to these categories must be maximum 30 years of age as on the examination date.
The age limit mentioned in Medical Council of India Gazette would not only apply for NEET 2018 but also for NEET 2019 and moving forward. So the candidate must be minimum 17 years old as on 31st December of the year of admission and maximum 25 years old as on the date of examination. The lower limit for the candidates belonging to the SC, ST and OBC category shall remain the same. However, a relaxation of 5 years shall be given to them for the upper age limit which means they can apply for this exam until they are 30.
As per the Gazette, “Provided further that in order to be eligible, the upper age limit for candidates appearing for National Eligibility Entrance Test and seeking admission to MBBS programme shall be 25 years as on the date of examination with a relaxation of 5 years for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC category and persons entitled for reservation under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016”.
The age limit has been set by CBSE on the recommendation of the Medical Council of India and Dental Council of India. A candidate can appear in NEET 2018 only if he fulfils the newly defined age criteria along with the other eligibility criteria including the educational qualification and number of attempts.
