The IISc and IIT organizations are in charge of conducting the IIT JAM exam annually for MSC and Ph.D. courses. The exam is organized in a computer-based mode and is scheduled to be conducted on 12 Feb 2023. Aspiring candidates need to get familiar with the IIT JAM exam pattern to sail through the exam. Below given are some of the details that will help you prepare well for the exam: 

  • The exam is divided into 3 sections and comprises 60 questions 
  • The IIT JAM exam is 100 marks
  • The students are given 3 hours to solve the paper
  • The questions are objective type and are conducted in an online mode
  • No negative marking is done in section B and Section C

Details about IIT JAM Exam pattern 2023

Entire details about the IIT JAM Exam pattern 2023 are given below: 

Section Number and Type of Questions
Section-A  30 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
Section-B 10 Multiple Select Questions (MSQ)
Section-C 20 Numerical Answer Type (NAT)

The complete details of the 3 sections are mentioned below:

Section A

  • Total questions: 30 MCQs
  • Marking pattern: Each question will carry one or two marks
  • Each question contains four options and the student has to choose one option by clicking on the right one. 

Section B

  • Total questions: 10 MCQs
  • Marking pattern: each question carries 2 marks
  • A question can have more than one correct answer. For every correct answer, 2 marks are given.

Section C

  • Total questions: 20 Numerical Answer Type questions
  • Marking pattern: each question carries 2 marks
  • No options are provided to the students. The answer is to be given by pressing the number through the virtual keyboard.

IIT JAM Exam pattern 2023: Marking Scheme

  • The question paper contains 60 questions carrying 100 marks.
  • The negative marking rule is not applied to sections B and C but only to section A.
  • There is no deduction in the marks for unattempted questions
  • For an incorrect answer, ⅓ marks will be subtracted in section A for a 1 mark question and 2/3 marks will be subtracted in a 2 mark question.

Note: It is important for the students to download the IIT JAM admit card by January 2023.

The IIT JAM paper is conducted in two sessions. The details of the same are mentioned in the table below:

IIT JAM 2023 exam application form

The application forms of the IIT JAM 2023 were issued on 7th September 2023, students wanting to appear for the IIT JAM exam can register for the same. The last date of registration is October 11th, 2023.
